'Bones' season five review

Crime solving, sexual tension and a splash of amnesia. What more could we ask for?

The season finale of “Bones” ended with emergency brain surgery for agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and an oh-so-obvious cliffhanger when he came to and couldn’t even remember his partner in crime solving and sexual tension Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel).

Fortunately, there’ll be no amnesia arc for season five, because it picks up six weeks after the surgery, with Booth (almost) completely recovered. One thing he hasn’t moved on from, however, is his dream of wedded bliss to Brennan. Is this some sort of post-traumatic stress or is the unrequited couple finally about to pair off?

The buzz: Cyndi Lauper makes a cameo in the season premiere as a psychic suspect. Guest stars will be in no short supply during the rest of the year, as the forensic team will continue a revolving door of lab assistants in its pursuit of a replacement for long-gone Zach.

The verdict:
Can't say this new-ish Thursday time slot is going to be easy on anyone's DVR, but "Bones" is still the business—though we're afraid to say that the recent two-season pickup probably means there won't be any Brennan and Booth loving on deck for this year, at least aside from dream sequences.

Did you know?
Emily Deschanel's younger (and slightly more famous) sister Zooey has reportedly been itching to appear on her sibling’s series. Producers let it slip a few weeks back that a cameo may finally be in the cards for the fifth season, with Zooey appearing as Brennan's cousin this December if the stars and schedules align.

"Bones" premieres Thursday, September 17,  at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
