Colfax Avenue stretches for 26 miles, and has a checkered reputation almost as long. You never know what you’ll find there, with businesses that range from quaint to questionable. Lucky for us the Cafe Star falls in the plus category and delivers a warm embrace in the midst of the chaos. The menu is a uniquely satisfying blend of American comfort food and Italian cuisine. Where else can you find Crawfish Pot Pie with potatoes and peas in a brandy cream sauce happily coexisting on a menu with homemade pizza and pastas? The Cafe Star makes its own pizza dough and several varieties of pasta - fettucine, ravioli, cavatelle, gnocchi and pappardelle - in house. Seafood lovers haven’t been left out; the Star offers a nice variety of mussels and an appetizer of Prosciutto-wrapped Prawns that have been poached gently in butter and coaxed to ultimate sweetness on the grill. Don’t go on Tuesdays, when the restaurant staff takes a well-deserved breather, but definitely put the Cafe Star on your dining agenda.
