As a former New Yorker, I know deli. Having grown up with Katz’s on the Lower East Side, taken visitors to Carnegie in Midtown, mourned the loss of Kaplan’s on East 59th and now enjoy Artie’s at 82nd & Broadway on the UWS, The New York Deli News is my “home away from home” when I have a craving for deli, both food and experience. I have been enjoying the New York Deli News since it opened 20+ years ago when Arthur (may he rest in peace), the oldest waiter in Denver still brought food to the table with wit and humor. For those who did not have the pleasure of knowing Arthur, his picture hangs in Booth #1 which is named Arthur's Booth in his honor. While The New York Deli News in my opinion has the best deli meats in the metro area and desserts (the cheesecake is on par with The Palm, my other home away from home refuge), I admit I am a creature of habit and during 99% of my visit's I order a “French Dip”. The other 1%, the Prime Rib Special on Friday nights. I have enjoyed the perfectly cured pastrami and the brine on the corned beef is succulent. The “deli hash” screams Upper West Side (UWS) and the Dr. Browns Cel-Ray completes the experience. While I have tried the majority of the menu, I keep returning to The French Dip, a non-traditional deli meal. Start with New York procured brisket cooked to a tender consistency. Pile the brisket high on a seeded Kaiser roll, perfectly split. On the side, french fries, cooked golden brown which would make McDonald’s jealous. Yet, I am not a purist; I substitute Russian dressing for the “au jus” as a real New Yorker does. Of course I enjoy the cole-slaw as every meal must have a vegetable. Prior to “the Dip”, I enjoy the pickles on the table. Also, The New York Deli News is one of the few places which knows how to make an Iced Coffee. A New York Iced Coffee, not the pretend stuff at Starbucks. By the way, regular means one cream and two sugars. The one thing The New York Deli News lacks is the "New York Attitude". The owners and staff are truly “hands on” and greet customers, new and old-timers as family. The pictures in the entry hall of the owner with the many “younger customers” provide insight to the next generations of deli patrons. The children are all smiling (probably because Mom and Dad shared a delicious homemade “Black and White” and the children are on a sugar high. Now if we can only get a Dunkin’ Donuts in Denver (maybe replace a few Krispy Kremes). BTW: Heidi McGuire, my treat at The New York Deli News.
The New York Deli News is by far my favorite place to go for brunchner (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). In the morning, don't miss their breakfast burritos. They honestly are the best in Denver. For lunch, bring a friend and share a cobb salad platter. This salad can easily feed two, if not eight! If salad is not your thing, go for one of their layered sandwiches. Wrap-up the day right with a BBQ brisket sandwich for dinner. They also have ridiculously inexpensive early bird specials. Don't forget the infamous black-and-white cookie for dessert!
I have gone to the deli regularly over the last three years since moving to Denver for school, and this is by far my favorite place to come and eat and to take family and friends visiting from out of town. For breakfast, lunch or dinner, this is THE place to go. The staff is attentive and courteous as well as the managers Al and Tory. I have yet to ever have a bad meal or bad service while eating here. The breakfast burritos which are on special a few days during the week is the best breakfast burrito I have ever had. The menu offerings seem endless and they always fill you up leaving you satisfied after eating. I know of no one who leaves the Deli still hungry for more food. The food is truly reminiscent of a deli straight out of New York City...something that is truly hard to find in Denver.
